Lachit Borphukan was a legendary Ahom general in the 17th century who is remembered for his heroic deeds and exemplary leadership. He is credited for driving out the Mughals from Assam, who had invaded and occupied the state for a brief period of time. Lachit Borphukan: The Legendary Ahom General

Lachit Borphukan was born in a royal Ahom family in 1622 AD and was the son of Momai Tamuli Barbarua, a renowned Ahom general. He was trained in military tactics and warfare from a young age and soon rose to be the commander of the Ahom army. He was also a great scholar and was well-versed in the scriptures of Hinduism.

In 1667, the Mughals under Aurangzeb invaded Assam, and Lachit Borphukan was appointed the commander-in-chief of the Ahom army by the Ahom king, Swargadeo Chakradhwaj Singha. Under his leadership, the Ahom army fought back and defeated the Mughals in the famous Battle of Saraighat. Lachit Borphukan’s strategies and tactics were instrumental in securing the victory for the Ahoms.

After the victory, Lachit Borphukan was given the title of Borphukan, which was the highest civilian post in the Ahom kingdom. He was known for his sense of justice and fairness, and served the Ahom kingdom with distinction.
